Did you know that Thanksgiving is also National Family Health History Day?

When people think of Thanksgiving Day thoughts of food, family, fun and relaxation usually come to mind.  We give thanks for all of our blessings including the family and friends we have gathered around our abundant tables.

Well, those family members are in a sense our medical history road map, which is why in 2004 the U.S. Surgeon General declared Thanksgiving the National Family Health History Day.  He encouraged American families to talk about and write down the health problems that run in their family.  The hope is that by understanding what diseases run in the family, individuals can begin appropriate screenings and health practices with the intent of ensuring a long and healthy life.

If you have questions about screening, prevention or how to talk with your family about your family health history, your Work Stride oncology nurse navigator can help. You can reach her at 844-446-6229 or by email, at gestionarcancer@jh.edu.
